These drivers offer their time, vehicles, and skills to ensure each wreath is delivered safely to veterans’ cemeteries, transforming long journeys into significant acts of remembrance.

Which Came First? Thanksgiving or Football?

As we gear up for the celebration, McCollister's wants to know! Families have been gathering for generations, but it was officially recognized as a national holiday in the U.S. in 1863 when President Lincoln designated the last Thursday in November as a day of thanks.

The Thanksgiving football tradition came a little later—college powerhouses like Yale and Princeton initiated the custom with Thanksgiving Day games starting in 1876. Since then, turkey and touchdown have been a holiday staple.

Celebrating 80 Years of McCollister’s — and the Return of a Legend

Flash back to St Patrick's Day, March 17th , 1976 when the Burlington County Times sat down with H. Daniel McCollister to talk about something that always turned heads on the highway — the McCollister’s Leprechaun.

Sitting behind a desk surrounded by leprechauns of every shape and size, Dan shared how this little green ambassador first came to life. In 1968–1969, McCollister’s set out to create a memorable, eye-catching icon. After plenty of discussion, an homage to the company’s Scotch-Irish heritage was chosen. With the help of Rudy’s Sign Co. in Riverside, NJ, the first smiling leprechaun was painted onto a McCollister’s truck — and the rest was history.

For decades, these cheerful “smiling imps” traveled across America’s highways, byways, toll roads, and neighborhoods, sparking conversations wherever they went. Drivers often shared stories of customers who remembered the lucky leprechaun long after their move was complete.

“This is a highly competitive field,” Dan said in 1976. “When we do a good job, we want people to remember us.” And they did — the leprechaun helped build the brand recognition that carried McCollister’s forward, all the way to today, 80 years strong.

Now, as McCollister's celebrates our 80th anniversary, the Leprechaun is back. Refreshed, modernized, and ready for new adventures.
