Winter is here! Below are some tips to keep you safe on the road, no matter the weather.
REDUCE SPEED
It's essential to take your time and adequately plan for your trip, allocating an additional 1-2 hours for unexpected circumstances such as weather, traffic, construction, and HOS breaks.
BE CAUTIOUS
Be vigilant and cautious while driving, especially in parking lots and on the road. Check the parking lot and roadway surfaces for ice, avoid snow and ice piles, and be patient while navigating close-quarter maneuvers.
SECURE AND TARP LOADS CAREFULLY
During winter, trailers can be slippery, so pay extra attention and take your time while securing loads. Stopping forward/rearward motion should be at the top of your mind, and all loads must be fully tarped to protect the commodity from the elements.
MANAGE HOURS OF SERVICE
Managing your Hours of Service (HOS) is crucial, especially when you need to account for unexpected weather delays. Never violate your HOS! Have at least three planned trips ready and know where you are going to park for the night before you start your day.
DO NOT NEGLECT PRE/POST-TRIP INSPECTIONS
Perform detailed inspections on your equipment, even in cold weather. It's critical to be seen on the road – make sure your lights and reflective tape are working properly. Remember the fifth principle of the SMITH SYSTEM - "Make Sure They See You."
