The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has installed “Heads Up” AI camera units across I‑40 in the western, central, and eastern regions.

Units are mobile, they can be relocated to different high-traffic areas for commercial vehicles.

What Do They Detect?
As a commercial truck passes beneath, the system captures three still images: the truck, the license plate, and a view inside the cab.
Onboard AI analyses these images to flag two potential violations:

Holding a cell phone (hands-free law violation).

Not wearing a seatbelt, which is compulsory for commercial drivers.

What Happens Next?
If the AI flags a possible violation, photos are immediately sent to a trooper stationed nearby (often more than half a mile ahead).

The officer reviews the evidence and may initiate a traffic stop if the violation is confirmed. Fines for commercial drivers can be up to $100 per offense.

In a recent deployment near Hickory, NC, troopers reported 5–10 violations in just 30 minutes.
