Good afternoon Everyone. Today's photos of the month are the Highway 22 Roundabout and the West 94 Business Loop Roundabout!

These two roundabouts are almost at completion. According to the North Dakota Department of Transportation, these roundabouts will improve the safety and traffic flow at these intersections. This is especially true when long vehicles need more space to turn around.

These features will include:
-A Frontage road alignment
-Shared-use paths
-New lighting

As the local joke goes, "There are two seasons in North Dakota, winter and road-construction". With the road construction almost complete, drivers and pedestrians can enjoy the good use of these roundabouts.

Instructional Tip of the Week: El Nino

What is El Nino? And why should we care about it? It is a type of climate pattern that occurs in the Pacific Ocean. The reason why it is important is because it can affect weather conditions worldwide, especially in North Dakota.

It occurs when warm water in the Pacific Ocean flows toward the west coast of South America. This warm water affects the Pacific Jet Stream, in which it moves from South America up north. In turn, this causes warmer and dryer weather in the Northern U.S and Canada.

What does this mean for North Dakota? Expect the following:
-Warmer Temperatures in the Winter
-Less Precipitation and Snowfall

It's important to note that even small weather changes in one part of the globe, can affect many weather patterns worldwide. That's the instructional tip for this week!

Today's instructional tip of the week: Twin Boom Aircraft

What is a twin boom aircraft? It is an aircraft with two longitudinal spars, or "booms". This aircraft construction is designed to provide supporting structures, as well as to house auxiliary compartments like fuel tanks. While it's primary use is for military applications, it's also been used for civilian applications.

Examples of this design include:
1. The Lockheed P38 Lightning
2. The Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar
3. The Cessna 337 Skymaster
4. The Scaled Composites Global Flyer (the first solo aircraft to fly non-stop around the world)

With every aircraft design, it comes with both advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:
1. Aircraft stability and control
2.Structural Support
3. Payload Flexibility
4. Easier Maintenance
5.Propulsion Efficiency

Disadvantages:
1. Increased Drag
2. Added Weight
3. Structural Inefficiencies

Although it is an old school design, it still applied across many aircraft platforms. Even General Aviation aircraft still utilize this design. By knowing the specific type of aircraft, it will help you achieve your flying profile. That's the instructional tip for this week!

Today's post will be a mechanical tip of the week: The Prop Balancer

During aircraft inspections, airplanes get connected with a device called a Prop Balancer. The purpose is to sense the correct propeller vibration, so the engine can run smoothly.

It helps by achieving the following:
-Detecting vibration levels for propeller imbalance
-Guides weight placement to correct propeller balance
-Improve engine longevity
-Enhances flight comfort by minimizing vibration (especially true for the pilot and passengers)

At Western Edge Aviation, we provide prop balancing not just for our fleet, but for any aircraft needing a service. If you need your aircraft fixed or serviced, give us a call at 701-483-4221. That's the mechanical tip for today!
