Don't underestimate a little snow. If there is falling or blowing snow, chances are there will be slick spots that could send your vehicle in unexpected directions. Keep both hands on the wheel, turn off the cruise control and slow down.

States in the Mid America Association of State Transportation Officials organization are working together to establish more uniform weight limits.

Recently, member states of the association have identified acceptable “emergency divisible load” truck weights for disasters in the region. Those 10 states are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin.

The policy expands emergency interstate truck weights from 80,000 pounds to a permitted weight of 88,000 pounds, with no more than a 10% increase per axle.

Police in California recently arrested two people in connection with the theft of several trucks, shipping containers and more than $900,000 in cargo

The California Highway Patrol's Southern Division's Special Services Command's Cargo Theft Interdiction Program Task Force assisted Vernon Police Department with a report of a stolen cargo container in the city of Vernon.

In Iowa, 336 people were fatally injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2019. And 42.53 percent of these people were not wearing seat belts.

Continued supply issues, in addition to winter weather conditions, have led several states in the Midwest and West to declare emergencies related to petroleum and propane products.

Iowa’s disaster proclamation, in effect until Feb. 5, states “because of high demand for petroleum products throughout the Midwest, the people of Iowa are faced with extensive challenges to timely access to supplies of propane and petroleum products.”

The order goes on to say that drivers transporting these products are experiencing long wait times at terminals as well as challenging driving conditions such as ice and snow.
