The Internal Revenue Service announced Monday, January 26, 2026, as the opening of the nation’s 2026 filing season. This year, several new tax law provisions of the One, Big, Beautiful Bill become effective, which could impact federal taxes, credits and deductions.

Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026, to file their 2025 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this year, with most taxpayers filing electronically.

Long read but great information to answer some of the confusing questions that affect a majority of taxpayers' refund:

Three major changes (that some may not be aware of):

1. ELIMINATION OF THE PERSONAL EXEMPTION. The deduction for Personal Exemption was suspended for the Tax Years 2018 through 2025 by the Tax Cuts and Job Act.

THIS MEANS that if you are still taking an Exemption for yourself on your W-4 form (the form you fill out for work dictating how much taxes should be withheld), that will affect your tax refund (negatively) because you can no longer claim yourself on your tax return.

2. EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT (refundable credit), CHILD TAX CREDIT (off-set credit) and ADDITIONAL CHILD TAX CREDIT (refundable credit).

** The Earned Income Tax Credit is designed to help low-to-medium income taxpayers by increasing the amount of their refund.

Several taxpayers were surprised to find that their refund this tax year was significantly less than their refund last tax season even if their earned income was very similar in amounts. That is because when you filed your return in 2022 (for income earned in 2021) and in 2021 (for income earned in 2020), the government realized that it was MUCH less due to COVID in 2020 & 2021 and allowed low-income taxpayers to use the income earned in 2019 to figure your Earned Income Tax Credit; which gave you a higher tax refund. For example, if you made $2000 in 2020 but made $19,000 in 2019, thr IRS allowed you to use your 2019 earned income to give you a higher Earned Income Credit. That option no longer exist this tax season. See the following link for that table:

** The Child Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit is available to those taxpayers having a dependents 16 years old and younger and is based on your income as well. The total Child Tax Credit is $3600 for qualifying dependents under the age of 6 and $3000 per child under the age of 18. It initially starts as an OFF-SET Credit. For example: If at the point of your return your tax liability is $300 and you have a 14 year old dependent, $300 of the Child Tax Credit will be used to make your tax liability $0.00 and the remaining $2700 will now turn into the Additional Child Tax Credit (which is a REFUNDABLE CREDIT) and will be refunded to you.

Hopefully, this information helps with some of the questions and confusion some have.
