Breaking: The FAA is proposing a new Airworthiness Directive following the NTSB’s findings from the February 2024 accident involving a CF34-3 powered aircraft.

The NPRM focuses on inspection and maintenance actions for CF34-3 engines after investigators identified corrosion in the variable geometry system as the cause of a dual engine failure.

The proposal follows updates to manufacturer guidance identified during the investigation and moves toward making those inspection actions mandatory.

This marks a clear step from investigation findings to regulatory action.

As we were looking through old Hop-A-Jet photos for the 50th, we kept seeing the same classically cool jet:

The Learjet 35.

This is the same type of jet Harvey Hop brought into the business early on. One of the first aircraft in the fleet, and one that shows up often in those early years.

It set a new standard for speed and climb when it was introduced, and it helped shape early private aviation.

Seeing it in person at our 50th was a wonderful reminder of how far the industry has come.

The conversation covers the Naples accident and the final NTSB report, along with what operators can take away from it. There’s also insight into how situations like this are handled and what goes into maintaining standards over time.

We appreciate the NTSB’s thorough and objective assessment, and the clarity it provides.

Our commitment remains the same today as it has for the past 50 years: maintaining the highest standards across every aircraft, every crew, and every flight.

The NTSB released the final report on the crash of a Hop-A-Jet Bombardier Challenger 604 on Feb. 9, 2024, due to corrosion in the jet’s GE CF34-3B engines’ variable geometry system.

Hop-A-Jet president Barry Ellis told AIN, “We’re very happy, the NTSB did an accurate assessment, and the way that it was written is understandable to a layman.”
