What’s your secret sauce?

A meal is a meal is a meal – until you meet the right chef. The chef who can take ordinary ingredients and fuse them in an extraordinary combination, in the perfect proportions. It’s not magic, it’s not science. It takes effort and a lot of trial and error to get the combination right - to create the secret sauce.

Achieving excellence in life is also about how you create your secret sauce. Discovering your talents, expanding and cultivating them, and then blending them into the perfect mix. It’s the recipe unique to you.

Discovering your secret sauce is often a process of many attempts, of trial and error and trying again. It’s moving beyond what you think you like, expanding your personal awareness, and discovering what you truly do well.

What you do well is what grows your passion. What you do well is the expression of your secret sauce.

What we give out will return

Want truth, give truth. Want respect, show respect.

We must be thoughtful about the energy, the mojo, we send out into our world. What we share seems to find its way back into our lives. Perhaps not right away, but at some point it shows up.

The act of giving creates an expectation of like-kind reciprocity. That reciprocity comes back with either a negative or positive impact on our lives – it’s never neutral.

What we give we ultimately get back.

Your Superpower

If knowledge is power, then learning is your superpower.

Cultivating this superpower depends on your teachability and your motivation – both within your control; both tied to choices you make every day.

Teachability is constrained by your ego - ego always gets in the way. You have to let go of pride, fear, and insecurity. You have to get real about what you don’t know. “Been there, done it” is not an excuse. Even billionaires and Nobel Prize winners stay committed to the learning path, always addressing their ignorance.

Get excited and fill in the gaps; stay receptive to opportunities for personal growth. It’s up to you to drive yourself and grow. That’s how you achieve goals, that’s how you realize dreams.

Ideas are common.

Actions rare.

Until you act, your genius is just formless, static energy. Plenty of potential, but nothing delivered. Until you act, your ideas share no purpose, give no results.

Why not act on your ideas? In some way you will change yourself, and in the process change your world.

What has to die?

What in your life has to die for you to more fully thrive and be alive? What has to be destroyed in order to create the better you?

Is there a habit you need to jettison? An attitude you need to change? An ego that needs to be checked?

Unless you are unequivocally where you want to be today, and have in your grasp exactly where you want to be tomorrow, and the next day, and the next - something has to change. Is there something inside that has to die?

Is it the mountain ahead, or the stone in your shoe?

We get focused on climbing the mountain, and miss the pebbles that trip us up.

Pay attention to the small stuff too.

Be wary near the end of the race

The danger is greatest when you are close to the finish line. When you are inches away from achievement.

Unconscious self-sabotage and negative influences from others create unforeseen obstacles. They can slow you down, cause you to hesitate, and unravel your progress.

Fear of success is real. Others, yes, even friends, can be threatened by your progress.

Get focused on the finish. Get ruthless with yourself. Sidestep the negative influence of others.

Frank was right

“Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.” – Francis of Assisi

No excuses. Every action need not be extraordinary. But you have to start. You have to start with ordinary circumstances, execute the basics and keep pushing up. You have to attack the small stuff that’s right in front of you to get ready for the big leaps that show up later.

No brainer, right? Wrong. Too many compromise their steps up the ladder – they want to start at the top; they want to begin with quantum leaps rather than start with small steps. And they fail to make the climb.

Doing the impossible is the rarified territory of the pros – the ones who just started by doing what’s necessary, and then moved their way up.

Be a pro.

Judge less

It’s easy to judge. Easy to jump to conclusions before first seeking to understand.

Seeking the good in people and situations is almost always a better frame of reference to start with.

And showing kindness and a smile costs nothing.

Judge not less you be judged. How’s that working for you?

What hurts?

What can you do about it? How can you keep going in spite of the pain? My football coach used to ask, “Are you hurt, or injured?” Injury requires recovery. Hurt means you keep charging ahead.

Think hard and clear about what hurts.

You can move forward, or stall, or fall behind. Regardless of what hurts.

Don’t be a bad ender

When it’s time to move on, move on.

Everything in life is in some stage of change. Sometimes the journey is ascending, sometimes descending, sometimes stuck. Relationships, careers, and personal goals are good examples.

When the goodness is gone, when you are trying too hard to make things work, when you’re struggling under expectations you didn’t sign up for. When you realize what worked yesterday won’t work tomorrow, it’s time to stop and think about what’s next.

When it’s time to move on, step up to that reality. Step up, let go, and move on.

The one thing.

What’s the one thing I can do today that will make a difference for a thousand tomorrows?

What single step can I take today to grow, to become more valuable, to chip away at some obstacle in the way of what I want?

Tomorrow will be easier when I do that one thing today.
