For exporters, container shipping still far from pre-COVID ‘normal’
Freight rates are higher and scheduling complications are worse.

📉 Despite U.S. import container rates normalizing, export rates remain elevated, up double digits from pre-COVID levels, posing challenges for American exporters.
🌐 Sailing schedules for exports have become more irregular since the pandemic, leading to increased costs for exporters in detention, demurrage, and storage due to inadequate communication from ocean carriers.
💸 According to Peter Friedmann, executive director of the Agriculture Transportation Coalition, higher rates aren't the primary concern; exporters face additional costs due to carriers' lack of timely and accurate data on sailing schedules and return dates.
🚢 Export rates, as assessed by the World Container Index, show a 66% increase for the Los Angeles-to-Shanghai lane and a 27% increase for the New York-Rotterdam route compared to rates five years ago.
📈 U.S. export demand has outperformed import demand over the past year, contributing to sustained export rates. Goods like soybeans, hay, and lumber, vital for global markets, continue to drive the demand for U.S. exports.
📦 The U.S. Census Bureau reveals key export categories: wood pulp and paper (19%), plastics (12%), oil seeds, grain, fruit, and nuts (10%), food industry refuse and waste (6%), wood (5%), and iron and steel (5%). These categories highlight the diverse range of products filling U.S. export containers.

🌱 Maersk piloted sustainable second-generation biofuels, aiming to reduce carbon emissions by 20% during a trial on a Triple-E vessel in 2019.

🛳️ The Triple-E class design, an improved version of Emma Maersk, features a U-shaped hull, accommodating 1,500 more containers than its predecessor.

Arizona begins removing wall of shipping containers on Mexico border

🚆 Canadian National Railway ( ), the Mississippi State Port of Authority at Gulfport, and Ports America introduced a new intermodal service at the Port of Gulfport.

🌐 The trial run for the new service is set to launch in the coming weeks, marking a strategic move by CN to enhance its intermodal options and compete with trucks for market share.

🚚 This development aligns with recent efforts by Class I railroads, including CN, to strengthen their intermodal offerings. J.B. Hunt Transport Services and BNSF Railway recently announced their premium intermodal offering, Quantum, aimed at improving delivery times.

🛤️ CN had previously expanded its intermodal services through collaborations with Union Pacific, Grupo Mexico, and Norfolk Southern.

🌊 The new intermodal service at the Port of Gulfport is expected to provide shippers with enhanced ocean connectivity options, facilitating the movement of goods between the Gulf Coast, US Midwest, and Canada.
