Labor Day Legislation
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.

WASHINGTON -- Fifty years after the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, thousands once again took to the streets of the nation's capital to call for economic and racial equality.

As the crowd made its way down Constitution Avenue, one of the city's main thoroughfares, in sprinkling rain, it was led by veterans of the 1963 march walking arm in arm.

For many of them, the event was a passing of the torch to a new generation to take up the unfinished cause of the civil rights movement--the promise of equality "embedded in the founding of America," as Cheryl LaRoche put it.

The local Washington resident was 17 when she drove down from New York to take part in the original march. Now she was here with her 17-year-old grandson, Jackson Price.

Honestly, the Bay Bridge is a nice looking bridge at night. It just hasn't kept up with the times in terms of traffic flow. There aren't enough lanes for the amount of traffic that flows in and out of SF. Hopefully the new Bay Bridge solves this issue...hopefully...not likely though.

The terraforming of Mars is the hypothetical process by which Martian climate, surface, and known properties would be deliberately changed with the goal of making large areas of the environment more hospitable to human habitation, thus making human colonization much safer and more sustainable.

The concept relies on the assumption that the environment of a planet can be altered through artificial means. In addition, the feasibility of creating a planetary biosphere on Mars is undetermined. There are several proposed methods, some of which present prohibitive economic and natural resource costs, and others which may be currently technologically achievable.[1]

A Nova Scotia man who killed two teenagers while driving almost two decades ago pleaded guilty to impaired driving and possession of ma*****na on Monday.

Ralph Parker, 38, was stopped at a checkpoint along the Magazine Hill in May. He failed a roadside sobriety test and was taken to the nearest RCMP detachment, where he refused to take a breathalyzer test.

He was previously convicted of dangerous driving causing the deaths of 15-year-old Renee Lee Orichefsky and her 13-year-old sister, Danielle, in Dartmouth in 1995. Two other teens were injured when Parker lost control of his car.

Parker admitted he was drinking beer before driving his car that night but he was never given a breathalyzer test or charged with impaired driving. Instead, he was charged and convicted of dangerous driving causing death.

On Monday, Parker was fined $2,100 for the impaired driving and possession charge.

He was also handed a two-year driving probation and two years of probation, including counselling. Parker must stay away from alcohol and submit a DNA sample.

In court, Parker apologized and said he's been on a long road to recovery for substance abuse and the May incident was a slip.
