Control is the differentiator.

The next evolution of third-party logistics will not be defined by more platforms or incremental features.

It will be defined by governance.

Future-ready operating models establish explicit decision ownership, system-enforced rules, and clear boundaries for how intelligence is applied. They scale relationships without relying on heroics or constant escalation.

This is not bureaucracy.

Santa's coming! And will it cost us?

By Santa I mean the holiday shopping season and all the consumer demand that comes along with that. Or is the consumer still experiencing a COVID hangover!

Retailers are already scurrying around trying to fill their shelves or build Ecommerce inventories in what's looking to be uncertain holiday spending. And by extension, the impact this uncertainty could have on transportation rates during the forth quarter?

Now, big guys like Walmart and Amazon have already made their bets and stocking up based on what they believe the consumer will be doing. And because of their size and impact on capacity, FTL freight rates seem to have hit bottom with carriers beginning to see a slight rebound.

For smaller and even midsize freight companies, the market is still very unstable and despite the number of carriers leaving the industry or parking trucks, there continues to be excess capacity that will counter the upward pressure of seasonal rates.

So for the consumer, and despite inflation, this holiday season should not be as painful as last year with plenty of inventory on shelves and promotions to entice spending. And retail could see a rebound!

But for the small and midsize carriers, this holiday season will not result in the typical seasonal increase in rates with the exception of a few lanes as excess capacity competes for business.

So lets put on Santa's wish list a request for robust consumer spending this holiday season and a soft landing for our economy in 2024!

For years all I have heard is the myth of the perfect client
In these stories, clients are eager to buy whatever you’re selling. They have tons of money to spend and they say yes a whole lot. Most importantly, they never require you get outside of your comfort zone. Ever.

Now personally, I’ve never met one of these perfect clients. And that’s okay. I like my clients. But a whole lot of people in our industry must believe these perfect clients exist somewhere. How else can you explain the sheer lack of flexibility out there?
Here in reality, clients face tough problems that need smart solutions. These clients come with a unique set of challenges. Things that don’t fit neatly into any category or have easy off-the-rack solutions.

Our clients face issues they can’t figure out. That’s why they come to us. So, I’m always surprised by how many people & companies in our business get upset when things get tough. We get selfish. And think only about the quick score and the easiest road to our own enrichment or that of our investors.

Most stuff, especially the work that really matters… it just doesn’t fit into the easy box. And yet, so many providers won’t tread outside of their tiny comfort zone. They’re selling one specific way of doing business, one answer… and they’re out there hunting for the client that fits it in every way. Or forcing clients to work within their limitations. They’re searching for that Perfect Client.

But really, it should be the other way around. You have clients. And you work hard to align with them, their culture, their processes, working towards becoming a true partner and doing whatever it takes. Our main purpose has always been… to find our clients the solutions they need. Not the solutions we want to sell them!
Look, I’m not saying you shouldn’t look for clients that are a good fit for your organization. I’m saying that there are many more perfect clients out there. If you’re willing to align as a true extension of their business and be willing to invest in relationship.

Time to embrace reality a little bit more. Understand the world is a messy & complicated place. That’s the beauty of it. We’re here because of the chaos. We help our clients navigate the rough & tumble world of business so they can do a better job of what they do best.

So, let’s all be more flexible. Let’s work with others more, even if it doesn’t check all the boxes we were hoping for.

Funny thing is, the more you work with people, the more you focus on your client’s success…

That’s the moment when success also finds you.

Wow.

Another investor who plunked down a truly mind-boggling sum on a new transportation technology. Everyday millions and millions of dollars go chasing after the next great innovation.

And I applaud every dime of it.

I’m a true believer when it comes to technology. And what it will bring to the industry.

The huge information aggregators – these dashboards that connect us together making all the manual back-and-forth obsolete. Shippers, truckers, brokers, everyone working in real time! I mean, it’s just remarkable what can be achieved in transportation and logistics because of it all.

But don’t let all this shiny new technology blind you. Don’t forget about the hardest working part of the transportation industry.

I’m talking about people.

Day-in, day-out…people make all of this work. People make the difference!

There are so many complex relationships in our business. They require actual, real humans to make those connections and build the partnerships that drive success.

We need people to be there!

On the other side of the phone.
At the warehouse.
In the office.
On the road.
On our screens.

We need our clients, customers, our business partners, collaborators.....And God knows we need a lot more people to drive a lot more trucks.

We need people to run all this new tech. And to teach it to other people and so on. Because people are an essential element to transportation excellence. Pure and simple.

So, while everyone’s rushing around to invest gobs of money in the latest tech…Let’s not forget to invest in our people.

Have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend. And let's not forget as we enjoy our weekend barbeques, there are thousands of drivers running our loads over the weekend!
