Art as an Investment
Art can be a significant investment, serving both as a source of aesthetic pleasure and a financial asset with the potential for substantial returns.
As an asset class, art is among the highest returning investments in recent decades.
To maintain and potentially increase the value of art as an investment, focus on provenance, condition, authenticity, and effective asset management.
Today I want to focus on condition.
• Maintain Pristine Condition: Condition is paramount. Proper handling, storage, and display are essential to prevent damage from light, humidity, and physical harm. Use professional restoration services only when necessary and by certified experts, as poor restoration can diminish value.
• Storage and Insurance: Store the art in a climate-controlled, secure facility and maintain appropriate, up-to-date insurance coverage from a specialized fine art insurer. This protects the physical asset and hedges against potential loss.
Here at ANR Fine Art Services & Transport we take the role of stewardship very seriously. Everything we do from packing, to handling, transporting, and storage is done with precision and care using the latest museum methodologies appropriate for the art.
Preservation and Condition
Maintaining the physical condition of the artwork is paramount, as damage or extensive restoration can significantly reduce its value.
• Climate Control: Maintain a stable environment with consistent temperature (around 70°F or less) and relative humidity (between 30% and 50%) to prevent material degradation.
• Lighting: Avoid or limit exposure to direct sunlight and other strong UV light sources, which can cause fading and damage.
• Handling and Storage: Always handle artwork with care, preferably with cotton gloves, and use acid-free materials for framing and storage. Store works flat with protective layering in a cool, dry, dark place.
• Professional Conservation: Engage professional, accredited conservators for any necessary cleaning, maintenance, or repairs. Local museums or galleries can often provide recommendations.
