Fall-Related Fractures and Role of Non-emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) in Supporting Recovery:

Falls are the leading cause of nonfatal and fatal injuries for seniors. According to the CDC, more than 14 million older adults aged 65+ fall annually, resulting in 3 million emergency department visits, 1 million hospitalizations, and over 300,000 hip fractures per year. Hospitalization is often followed by admission to rehabilitation centers for recovery and mobility training.

Rehabilitation plays a critical role in restoring strength, balance, and independence. However, recovery does not end within the walls of a rehab facility. Ongoing follow-up appointments with orthopedic specialists are essential to monitor healing, adjust treatment plans, manage pain, and prevent complications.

For many elderly patients, especially those recovering from fractures, transportation presents a significant challenge. Limited mobility, weight-bearing restrictions, and wheelchair dependence make standard transportation unsafe or impractical.

This is where professional Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT) services become invaluable.

Wheelchair-accessible NEMT provides:
· Safe, ADA-compliant vehicle access
· Proper wheelchair securement
· Trained drivers experienced in assisting mobility-limited patients
· Reliable, on-time transport to orthopedic follow-up visits
· Door-to-door or facility-to-clinic coordination

By ensuring dependable transportation from rehabilitation centers to orthopedic appointments, NEMT helps reduce missed visits, supports continuity of care, and ultimately contributes to better recovery outcomes.

As fall-related fractures continue to impact the aging population, coordinated transportation solutions remain a vital component of comprehensive post-acute care.

Happy New Year, Friends of Heal Wheel!

We are proud to announce the recent launch of Heal Wheel, a woman-owned non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) service based in East King County, created to serve our community with care, dignity, and reliability.

More Than a Ride: A New Standard in Non-Emergency Medical Transportation

NEMT is a specialized transportation service designed for individuals who need extra support getting to and from medical appointments and essential activities.
Our drivers are specially trained in CPR, first aid, defensive driving, ADA awareness, and wheelchair securement. Our vehicles are ADA-compliant and purpose-equipped to safely transport both ambulatory passengers and those who remain in wheelchairs. Every ride is planned with safety, comfort, and respect in mind.

To mark our launch, we offered introductory and holiday incentives to make transportation more accessible to people with mobility challenges. These incentives allowed many riders not only to attend important medical appointments, but also to enjoy simple joys such as going out to see holiday lights or seasonal displays; experiences that can otherwise be difficult without dependable, accessible transportation.

Since launching, we’ve been honored to support a wide range of transportation needs, including clinic visits, recurring dialysis appointments, and cosmetic procedures. Each type of ride comes with unique considerations, and our drivers are trained to provide calm, professional assistance, always prioritizing comfort and discretion.

Privacy is a cornerstone of our service. We are HIPAA compliant, meaning we follow strict standards to protect our riders’ personal and medical information. This is especially important for individuals undergoing cosmetic or elective procedures, who may prefer not to rely on friends or family for transportation. Choosing a professional, HIPAA-compliant service allows riders to maintain privacy, dignity, and peace of mind without uncomfortable conversations or unwanted disclosure.

Our Commitment

At the heart of our mission is a simple belief: transportation should never be a barrier to care, independence, or quality of life. Whether it’s a medical appointment, a recurring treatment, or simply a chance to enjoy time outside the home, we are here to provide safe, reliable, and compassionate transportation - every ride, every time.

Thank you for welcoming us into the community. We look forward to serving you, as well as your clients and loved ones.

Happy holidays everyone and wish you all a prosperous 2026! Thank you for your support for Heal Wheel, a recently launched non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) business based in Issaquah Highlands. Below is a piece on what NEMT is (and is not):

What Is Non-Emergency Medical Transportation (NEMT), and Why It’s Not Just a Taxi/Uber Service:

When people hear non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT), they often think of it as a simple ride service; essentially a taxi with a different name. In reality, NEMT is a highly specialized form of transportation designed to safely serve seniors, individuals with disabilities, and patients who need extra care and attention.

More Than a Ride:

NEMT exists to bridge a critical gap, helping people get to and from medical appointments, treatments, and essential daily activities when traditional transportation is not safe or practical. This includes trips for dialysis, chemotherapy, rehabilitation, physical therapy, hospital discharges, and follow-up appointments, as well as errands and community activities that support independence and quality of life.

Specialized Training Matters:

Unlike standard ride-hailing or taxi services, NEMT drivers undergo extensive training to ensure passenger safety and comfort. This typically includes:
• ADA sensitivity and disability awareness training
• Wheelchair securement and passenger restraint systems
• CPR, AED, and First Aid certification
• HIPAA compliance and patient privacy
• Defensive driving and emergency response
• Assisting passengers with mobility, cognitive, or sensory
challenges

This training enables drivers to support riders who may be frail, recovering from procedures, managing chronic conditions, or living with dementia, vision, or hearing impairments.

Purpose-Built Vehicles:

NEMT vehicles are also specially equipped, often with wheelchair lifts or ramps, securement systems, step assists, and climate-controlled, clean interiors. These features are essential to prevent injury, reduce stress, and ensure a dignified experience for every rider.

Safety, Dignity, and Peace of Mind:

At its core, NEMT is about more than transportation. It’s about safety, reliability, and care, giving riders and their families peace of mind that each trip is handled by trained professionals who understand their needs.
So while a taxi can take someone from Point A to Point B, non-emergency medical transportation ensures they get there safely, comfortably, and with respect.

That difference matters, every single ride.
