Short doesn't mean simple. You cross the Stream and the Banks in a single run, and a north wind against that current builds a sea that genuinely punishes boats.

Owners underestimate this one constantly because it's short enough to feel casual. It isn't. We go on the right day, or we don't go.

The Gulf Stream is a river. Cross it wrong and you'll find out.

Three or four knots of warm water running north. Get a north wind blowing against it and you don't get a chop — you get short, steep, close-together seas that stop a boat dead and break things that have never broken before.

The fix isn't seamanship. It's timing. You wait for the wind to have any south in it at all, and then it's a non-event.

Which is why "when can you leave?" is a better question than "how fast can you get there?"

Two people, one tablet, and a call that costs money either way.

Go now and you're committed to whatever's on the other side of that front. Wait and you're paying for dockage, crew standby and a schedule that slips.

There's no free option. There's only the one you can defend afterwards.

What I owe you isn't a guarantee of good weather — nobody can sell you that. It's that the decision gets made by someone who's made it before, with the forecast in front of them, and that you hear about it from me before it happens rather than after.

Route spotlight: Newport, RI → Tortola, BVI.

~1,500 nautical miles. 9–12 days. Best window: November.

This is the one people romanticise, and it's the one that demands the most from a boat. Straight offshore, well east of the rhumb line to stay out of the trades' teeth, and no meaningful bail-out once you're committed.

For roughly four days, nobody is coming. That changes what "ready" means — spares, redundancy, crew, and a boat that's had a proper look at rather than a quick once-over.

If you're thinking about it for November, we should be talking now.

You get the plan first. Then you get the price.

Backwards from how most of this industry works, and deliberately so.

Before you commit to anything, I'll put together the route, the alternates, the fuel math with real reserve, the tide gates and bridge schedules, and what the forecast has to look like for me to commit offshore.

You read it. You ask questions. Then we talk about money — and because the plan already exists, the number doesn't move later.

Nobody should be quoting you a delivery price before they've looked at your route.

Your boat is only as secure as the last line somebody else tied.

Storm season reminder, and I say this as gently as I can: go look at your own dock lines. Not the ones you remember tying. The ones that are actually on the boat right now.

Chafe gear where they cross the chocks. Enough length to let her rise. Doubled where it matters. Fenders that are actually between the hull and something hard rather than hanging decoratively.

Ten minutes today. It's the cheapest insurance there is.

Every boat on this dock got here somehow.

Boat show season. Hundreds of hulls, all in position, all photographed from the air, all looking like they simply appeared.

They didn't. Every one of them was moved — by somebody, on a schedule, through weather that didn't care about the schedule. The deliveries are the part nobody sees and the part everyone assumes will just work out.

Brokers: if you've got boats that need to be somewhere in late October, that's about six weeks of window and it's already narrowing.

The part of a delivery nobody ever photographs.

0600 at a fuel dock somewhere unglamorous. Taking on several hundred gallons slowly enough not to burp it back out, watching the vent, doing the arithmetic on reserve at the worst realistic burn rather than the brochure number.

It's twenty minutes of nothing. It's also the difference between arriving comfortably and arriving nervously.

Most of this job is boring on purpose. That's the product.

Route spotlight: Annapolis, MD → Stuart, FL.

~1,100 nautical miles. 7–9 days. Best window: October into November.

The Chesapeake exodus. We go offshore from the Bay down to Beaufort if the window holds, and then it's a genuine decision: keep going outside and make good time, or duck in and run the ditch with the shoaling reports open.

I'll tell you which on the morning we leave, not six weeks out when the forecast is fiction.

Southbound season starts in the dark. Every single time.

Departures are set by tides, bridge schedules and the hour you need to be somewhere by — never by what's convenient. So you're up at 0400, checking a forecast you already checked at midnight, running the engine room one more time by flashlight.

Then the sky does its thing about an hour out, and everyone on board briefly stops complaining.
