If you filed, good. That was the expensive penalty, and you stopped it.
If you owe and can't pay, the next step is a plan, not panic.
If you miss today, file anyway. The sooner, the smaller the penalty.

The October 15 extension deadline is tomorrow. E-file tonight or tomorrow. Pay whatever you can through IRS Direct Pay, and keep the confirmation numbers. If you owe more than you can pay, file anyway. We'll handle the balance next.

Start with this year's return. Get it filed by October 15 so the list stops getting longer. For older years, the IRS generally focuses on the most recent six years of returns to bring you back into compliance. It's a plan, not a pile.

After years of doing this, the same five IRS mistakes come up again and again. All five are avoidable.

1. Not opening the mail. The deadline runs whether you open it or not.
2. Not filing because you can't pay. Failure-to-file builds up to ten times faster each month than failure-to-pay.
3. Calling the IRS blind, before you know what's on your account.
4. Believing settlement ads. An Offer in Compromise is a formula based on your finances, and most people who call don't qualify. I'll tell you honestly if you don't.
5. Waiting. Every month adds penalties and interest, and some options close on a deadline.

The fix for all five is the same: know your numbers before you act.

Most people never ask about First-Time Abatement. If you had a clean penalty history for the three prior years and you've filed all your required returns, the IRS may remove a year's failure-to-file, failure-to-pay, or failure-to-deposit penalties. Eligibility is the IRS's call, but it's worth asking, and filing is a prerequisite.

This week: IRS collections run in order. Assessment and a first bill, reminder notices, a possible lien, a Final Notice with 30 days to request a hearing, and only then a levy in most cases. Every stage warns you first.

Not filing doesn't hide income. It can lead the IRS to prepare a return for you, called a Substitute for Return, which usually leaves out the deductions and expenses you'd have claimed. Filing your own return keeps you in control of the numbers.

Yes, and filing is what makes that possible. The IRS generally requires all of your required returns to be filed before it will approve an installment agreement. Individuals who owe $50,000 or less in combined tax, penalties and interest can usually apply online. Above that, or with business payroll taxes involved, it takes more work, and that's where I come in.

Can't pay by October 15? File anyway.

If you're on an extension, the 15th is your filing deadline β€” and the extension never covered the payment. Here's the part most people miss: the penalty for not filing is 10 times the penalty for not paying (5% a month vs. 0.5% a month). Filing on time, even with a balance you can't pay yet, keeps the more expensive penalty off your account.

File. Pay what you can. Then we talk about the rest.
