Pride is more than a festival, as it represents a continuous civil rights movement rooted in liberation, dignity, and resistance.

This journey towards equality has deep roots in LA beginning in 1950 when the Mattachine Society was founded in Silver Lake as one of America's first gay rights organizations. Decades of resistance followed, including the 1958 Cooper Do-nuts riot in Downtown LA and the historic 1967 protest at The Black Cat tavern in Silver Lake, which occurred years before the monumental 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City sparked the modern fight for LGBTQ+ liberation.

Angelenos made history again in 1970 by securing a legal permit with help from the ACLU to launch the world's very first permitted Pride Parade right on Hollywood Boulevard.

From a brave gathering of 1,000 marchers in 1970 to home to nearly 665,000 LGBTQ+ adults today, Los Angeles County continues to champion equity, visibility and intersectional civil rights.
