The Tony Banta character on Taxi was originally called Phil. Producers gave it Tony Danza's real first name after they cast him, because Danza had never acted before and they worried the boxer wouldn't respond to being called Phil on set. Danza wasn't even looking for a TV job. He was sweating on the bags at Gleason's Gym in New York, chasing a middleweight title, when a producer walked in asking for a boxer who could act. Judd Hirsch, the compassionate cab driver Alex Reiger anchoring every episode, was the only classically trained actor in the main cast.
