Things we're still teaching.

Notice anything missing on the right side of the bus? Here's a hint: when this item became required on all buses, the chances of "eventually becoming involved in a serious accident" diminished significantly.

Tomorrow evening could be another display like this from last week:

"A Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled for launch from Vandenberg SFB, Calif. tomorrow evening (March 28). The vehicle is slated to leave south base between 7:30 and 11:24 p.m. PDT and carry 22 Starlink satellites into orbit.

If the vehicle lifts off early in the launch window, a large portion of the southwestern U.S. and northwest Mexico could be treated to an interesting display as the rocket's exhaust is illuminated by the Sun at high altitude while suspended against a dusk or night sky."

Installing video cameras (as opposed to event recorders) can be an invaluable loss prevention and driver training tool in any bus. In my expert work, I find video footage will often help me in determining what actually happens, why it happened and who contributed to the incident, making it easier to reach an equitable settlement. From my experience in legal settings, I convinced my employer in my day job to transition from event recorders - which only show the driver and a forward view - to a four-channel DVR system with views forward, interior steps, and both sides of the coach. This has been an excellent tool to coach drivers and to use in class settings (with permission, of course) to show other drivers the consequences from not following safe driving techniques.

Increasing numbers of motorcoach operators are installing video cameras in buses as a tool for training and safety, and to help reduce insurance claims.

Fortunately, this episode turned out OK. In some cases, the outcome is much worse. A similar instance involving a high school student who was autistic here in CA resulted in the student's death. The response was the installation of child safety alarms in all California school buses. I was briefly involved a case in which the driver bypassed the system, resulting in the tragic death of a four year old boy. Drivers, no matter what, always check your buses at the end of each run.

Some ideas that might allow for the safe transportation of students. I'm iffy on the driver curtain pictured, as I think the hem edges would end up being a distraction and potential additional blind spot.

In an ongoing attempt to mitigate the exposure of COVID-19 on the school bus and protect school bus drivers and students, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) permitted the installation of both plexiglass barriers and clear plastic soft shields under certain conditions. Despite...
