With all the wind, snow is being completely blown off some Iowa roads this afternoon. What may be underneath are icy wheel tracks that could take you by surprise and spin you into the ditch.

The tracks form when snow is blown under warm tires, melts, and then refreezes. The icy spots aren't always visible and are VERY slick. This is what's happening on many Iowa roads today. If you look at the cameras on www.511ia.org, the roads may look clear, but you can't see just how slick and treacherous they are. So if the road is marked as "travel not advised" but looks clear, this icy danger is the likely reason why.
