Summer is almost upon us! Don't let a sweltering truck keep you from being comfortable. Make sure that your evaporator drain lines are clear, recirculation inlet not blocked and the system charged properly. Always check your belts to make sure everything is running smoothly. If you have to go down that path and get your system repaired. Make sure that your A/C drier or accumulator is replaced. Without it being replaced, you can face a system failure not being covered under warranty. The A/C manufacturers and/or Service facility can and most will require it to be replaced to be covered. Don't let someone overcharge you on a repair. If you want a 2nd opinion, we are always happy to help!

With Roadcheck 2024 right around the corner, there is some great news for ATIS (automatic Tire Inflation Systems). Change for this year is the ability to not be placed OOS (Out of Service) for leaks in the tread area. The leak has to be able to be maintained by the ATIS to 50% of the tire pressure rating on the sidewall of the tire.

Now if the tire has no ATIS, it will still be placed OOS. This is great news for trucks/trailers spec with ATIS. Now if they do have a leak, they can take it to the next service provider to have it repaired. CVSA has announced their annual Roadcheck inspection Safety Blitz for May 14-16. Their main focus this year will be on tractor protection valves, alcohol and controlled substance possession. While we agree that there should be no issues, we all are fearful of what I missed, and what will they find.

My Dad always would talk about these back in the 90's. He said he would take time off so he wouldn't worry about it. It wasn't that he had defective equipment, it was more of the hassle of DOT. He told of the story when he was in Pennsylvania on a backroad. He came upon a school that DOT was using and there were trucks everywhere! They were so packed that they were bypassing trucks. It looked more like a trap than a Safety Inspection. Since that day he made sure if he was caught out, that his equipment was within compliance.

It's not the few items that they are checking that will put you OOS. It's the items we overlook! Always make sure that your ELD instructions, 7 day of blank backup logs, tires and brakes are up to spec. Guarantee those as always will be top items for violations. While reviewing some invoices for a Company, we came across an unusual part that was charged. The wrong RTV sealant was being used in the repairs. We found that the Company was taking it to a certain repair facility and they were resealing leaking rears with this. We found that the trucks were having leaks come back. There are so many RTV's on the market, but the right one is crucial for longevity in repairs. Especially, when a reseal can now cost over $1,000. Best practice is to get an estimate for any repair anymore. We can assist with looking these over and help with your equipment to be repaired right the first time.

When looking at getting your rig towed. We are sometimes at the mercy of the County or limited resources. Predatory Towing is happening out there and the fees can rack up and be upwards of tens of thousands of dollars. There is legislation that is being promoted by US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg with DOT & FMCSA to help stop these Junk Fees! That is great for all of us for sure. If you feel that you are being the victim of Predatory Towing, we can review your invoice and help advise on next steps. Managing Inventory is no simple task. It can be as complex or simple as you need. We had a customer in Arkansas that had us do an audit. We found a lot of items that would help them improve their bottom line. One item we were shocked at is when you don't work with your Suppliers you will get burned. We found where the Techs were falling for the bait and switch of the Parts Reps. Have it be from taking them out to dinner, giving them freebee items, so be it. We won't go into detail, but we found where the customer was paying one Vendor 542% more for a washer over another Vendor! Now I'm not going to advocate an online major Retailer.... OUT-OF-SERVICE

This is what just happened to a 1 truck carrier, Adversity Transport in Houston, TX. The heading is what is stamped on their Operating Status. Is it easy to get this, no. We know many carriers that were 1 truck outfits including my parents. It is easy to do the right thing and keep operating. We can stop this from happening. Most are just not aware of the rules that govern and procrastinate and it causes issues. Others just willful have total disregard for the laws. Do we know the real reasons of what happened to Adversity Transport, no and we don't try to unless they come to us to see what they can do to get back in good standings. It will be a long road for them. Just looking at their records they had 8 out of service violations during inspections for multiple items! This was over a 16 month time period. There is no reason to have this many issues and keep trucking. I hate to say, but with a Carrier like this, I am glad they are off the road! Now I don't have to worry about anyone possibly getting hurt and/or killed due a mechanical issue with a truck.

Now onto Hours of Service. Out of 14 inspections, half of them the driver was put out of service for various things which gave them a 50% rating. National average for this was 6%. Going through the facts and it is crazy how this carrier got as far as it did. Adversity had an 89% Out of Service compared to the National average of 21%.

What most aren't reporting is that Adversity Transport was also put out of service for Driver in possession of narcotic drug/amphetamine.

If you have questions, feel free to get with us. Companies like this give the rest of the Trucking Industry a bad name. There is no reason Adversity Transport got this far. One time I have to say, I am glad that the FMCSA put them Out of Service. Hopefully the fines that are going to be levied are enough to keep them off the roads for good.

Had one of our local customer's in TX looking for a truck. He found an ad and asked what our thoughts were. We checked and found that all the tires were neglected. Advised that if the tires are this bad, what else could have been neglected.... What shocked us the most, is that a used truck dealer would be selling a truck in this condition. You'd figure that they would at least put new rubber all the way around to hide the previous owner's lack of maintenance.

Tires that look like this we see, but usually not this extreme. This is a condition of underinflation as you can see both sides of the tire are worn down. Over inflation would be the opposite and have the crown only worn down. What's even worse is if you look at the rear drive tires. They installed a new tire next to a worn out tire. Notice the angled wear across the tires.

General rule of thumb is that the tires should match 1/8" across an axle (4/32). This way abnormal wear due to tires mismatch doesn't occur. Especially with the cost of tires running on average $500 a tire. Valve caps are also needed to help with issues with the valve cores and leaking air from that.

We don't do a lot of driver training, but we do when it comes to maintenance we do.

Snagged this photo to show the importance of Pre-trip and Post-trip inspections. We work with many larger fleets. This is one item that drivers overlook until it is too late. This photo was actually the result of a violation. Simple fix that could have saved the carrier and driver points. Another item overlooked is the DOT inspection.
