🚛 Safety Tip Tuesday: Pre-Trip Inspection Series: Week 12 🚛

This week, we’re focusing on something that carries the weight of every load, mile after mile…TRAILER TIRES & WHEELS! 🛞

Your trailer tires work hard, especially when hauling heavy loads over long distances. Keeping them in good condition is an important part of preventing roadside breakdowns and maintaining control on the road.

During your pre-trip, take the time to inspect your tire inflation, tread depth, sidewalls, rims, lug nuts, and hub seals.

Watch for cuts, bulges, exposed cords, uneven wear, loose or missing lug nuts, and signs of leaking hub seals. Don’t forget to check the spacing between dual tires and look for anything lodged between them.

📏 FMCSA requires a minimum tread depth of 2/32 of an inch in every major groove on trailer tires. Remember, that’s different from the 4/32-inch minimum required for front steering tires.

A tire failure at highway speed isn’t just an inconvenience, it can put the driver and everyone sharing the road at risk.

🚛 Safety Tip Tuesday: Pre-Trip Inspection Series Week 11 🚛

This week, we’re continuing down the trailer and focusing on two systems that work hard every mile…TRAILER SUSPENSION & BRAKES!

Your trailer’s suspension helps support and distribute the weight of the load, while its braking system plays a critical role in keeping your truck and trailer under control.

During your pre-trip, take a close look at the springs, hangers, torque arms, air bags, brake chambers, hoses, slack adjusters, push rods, drums, and linings.

Watch for cracks, leaks, excessive wear, loose or missing hardware, and damaged components. Even a small issue can become a serious safety concern when you’re hauling a loaded trailer down the highway.

A properly functioning suspension helps maintain stability, and dependable brakes are essential when it’s time to slow down or stop.
