🚛 Safety Tip Tuesday: Pre-Trip Inspection Series-Week 5 🚛

This week, we’re putting the focus on one of the most important safety systems on any truck: FRONT BRAKES.

Before you roll, take the time to inspect your brake hoses and lines, brake chambers, slack adjusters, push rods, drums, and linings. Watch for air leaks, cracks, damage, excessive wear, loose components, or contamination.

When you’re moving thousands of pounds down the highway, your brakes need to be ready when you need them. A few minutes spent checking them during your pre-trip can catch a problem before it becomes a much bigger one on the road.

The best time to find a brake problem is before the wheels start turning. 🚛

We’re continuing to work our way around the truck each week with our Safety Tip Tuesday Pre-Trip Inspection Series. Next week, we’ll move on to another critical area of the truck!

Throwback Thursday 🚛

Today we’re looking back at a group of men who were a big part of Plainfield Trucking for many, many years.

🚛 Safety Tip Tuesday: Pre-Trip Inspection Series: Week 4 🚛

This week, we’re taking a look at your front suspension.

Your suspension does a whole lot more than give you a smoother ride. It helps support the weight of the truck, keeps your tires in proper contact with the road, and plays an important role in maintaining stability and control.

During your pre-trip, inspect your leaf springs, spring hangers, U-bolts, and shock absorbers. Look for anything cracked, broken, loose, leaking, shifted, or missing.

A suspension problem might start small, but under the weight and demands of a loaded truck, it can become a serious safety issue quickly. Catch it before you roll.

Last Throwback Thursday, we shared a photo of George Zettelmeier Jr. and Jesse Ruffalo celebrating the purchase of the business with their wives. A few of you asked us for more of the story so we went back to where it was first told. 📰

This newspaper article announced the sale of Frank Rothermel’s trucking business to George and Jesse and the beginning of Plainfield Trucking.

But the story actually started long before the name Plainfield Trucking was on the trucks.

Frank Rothermel had spent decades building a trucking business in Plainfield. His career stretched from driving a truck during World War I to hauling milk for the Plainfield Creamery, wood, potatoes, livestock and produce. By the time George and Jesse took over, Rothermel trucks had hauled potatoes and produce across the country, from Wisconsin to Alabama, Nebraska, North Dakota and New York.

George and Jesse weren’t strangers to trucking, either. Both Plainfield-area young men had previously operated milk routes for the Plainfield Creamery. When they purchased the business, they took over three semis, a stock truck, moving van, dump truck, tractor and loader.

The newspaper reported that the new firm would continue hauling produce and other items throughout the country, along with livestock, moving, sand and gravel.

More than 65 years later, a lot has changed: the trucks, the equipment, the technology and how far we’ve grown.

But the work ethic behind it hasn’t.

What started with two young men taking a chance on a trucking business in Plainfield, Wisconsin became the company we’re proud to carry forward today.

This is where the Plainfield Trucking story began. ❤️
