Beware of these AI Voice Scams

SCAM ALERT – “IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR LOVED ONE, BUT IT’S NOT”

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has an important message for you:

If you get a call from a loved one saying they’re in trouble, involved in an accident, arrested, or facing an emergency, and they urgently need money, it could be a scam! 🚩

Criminals are now using artificial intelligence voice cloning to mimic real voices. With just a short audio clip from social media, they can create a call that sounds exactly like someone you know.

They’ll say things like:
• “I’ve been in an accident, please don’t tell anyone”
• “I’m in jail and need bail money right now”
• “I lost my phone, send money to this number”

The goal is to create panic so you act fast before you have time to think.

Know that an unexpected call demanding money during an emergency is a red flag, especially when you are pressured to act immediately or keep it secret. These are common tactics used in scam attempts. 🚩

Protect yourself:
• Hang up and call your loved one directly using a known number
• Verify the situation with another family member or friend
• Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency based on a phone call alone
• Create a family “safe word” to confirm real emergencies
• Be cautious about what you share publicly; audio can be used to mimic voices

Your loved one’s voice may sound real, but the situation may not be.

Remember, scammers rely on fear, urgency, and emotion to trick you.

Take a moment. Verify. Then act.

SCAM ALERT – “YOU’RE UNDER INVESTIGATION, STAY ON THE LINE”

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has an urgent message for you:

If someone contacts you by phone or video call claiming to be law enforcement and tells you that you are under investigation and must stay on the line or risk arrest, it’s a scam! 🚩

This emerging scheme, often called a “digital arrest,” is designed to scare and control victims.

Scammers pose as law enforcement officers, complete with fake badges, uniforms, and official-looking video calls. They may accuse you of serious crimes such as money laundering or identity theft, and then say:
• “You cannot hang up, you are under active investigation”
• “Your phone is being monitored”
• “You must stay on this call to avoid arrest”
• “Pay a settlement to resolve this immediately”

Some victims are kept on the call for hours or even days, isolated and pressured into sending money.

Know that law enforcement will never demand payment to avoid arrest, require you to stay on a call during an investigation, or use threats and intimidation to pressure immediate action. Any situation involving urgency, isolation, or payment demands is a clear red flag. 🚩

Protect yourself:
• Hang up immediately; do not stay on the call
• Do not send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency
• Do not share personal or financial information
• Contact your local law enforcement agency directly using a verified number
• Talk to someone you trust; scammers rely on isolating you

Your safety is never handled over a video call or through a paid “settlement.”

Remember, real law enforcement does not operate through fear and payment demands.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Warrant for Arrest Scam Alert

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office is issuing an urgent warning to all residents regarding an ongoing scam involving individuals falsely claiming to be members of law enforcement.

Scammers are actively using the names of Sheriff’s Office personnel and contacting victims by phone, falsely stating that a warrant has been issued for their arrest. The caller then pressures the victim to make an immediate payment, often through unconventional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, to avoid being arrested.

THIS IS A SCAM!!!

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office wants to make this absolutely clear:
• We will NEVER call you to inform you of a warrant and demand payment.
• We will NEVER request payment over the phone to resolve any criminal matter.
• We do NOT accept payment in gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers to avoid arrest.

These tactics are designed to create fear and urgency, causing individuals to act quickly without verifying the information. Law enforcement agencies follow established legal procedures and do not conduct business in this manner.

If you receive one of these calls:
• Hang up immediately.
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money under any circumstances.
• Report the incident to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

If you are ever unsure about the legitimacy of a call, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at (772) 462-7300.

Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying informed. Share this message with family members, especially seniors, who are often targeted in these scams.

Your safety and awareness are our priority.

SCAM ALERT: THIS IS THE IRS. YOU OWE MONEY

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has an important message for you:

If you get a call, text, or email claiming to be from the IRS, Social Security, or your bank demanding immediate payment or personal information, it’s a scam! 🚩

Criminals are becoming more sophisticated. They can spoof phone numbers to make it look like the call is coming from a trusted agency or even your own bank.

They often try to create panic with messages like:
• “You owe back taxes and will be arrested.”
• “Your Social Security number has been compromised.”
• “Your bank account is at risk. Verify your information now.”

Then they demand payment through gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Know that banks will never ask for sensitive personal or financial information over the phone, and government agencies will never call and threaten immediate arrest.

Any request that involves urgent, untraceable payment or pressure to act immediately is a clear red flag. 🚩

Protect yourself:
• Hang up and contact the agency or bank using an official number
• Never give out personal or financial information to unsolicited callers
• Don’t trust caller ID alone; it can be faked
• Take a moment before acting, scammers rely on panic and urgency

Your best defense is slowing down and verifying before you act.

And remember, if it feels urgent and threatening, that is exactly what the scammer wants.

Share this message and help protect others from becoming victims.
