Beware of these AI Voice Scams
SCAM ALERT – “IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR LOVED ONE, BUT IT’S NOT”
The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office has an important message for you:
If you get a call from a loved one saying they’re in trouble, involved in an accident, arrested, or facing an emergency, and they urgently need money, it could be a scam! 🚩
Criminals are now using artificial intelligence voice cloning to mimic real voices. With just a short audio clip from social media, they can create a call that sounds exactly like someone you know.
They’ll say things like:
• “I’ve been in an accident, please don’t tell anyone”
• “I’m in jail and need bail money right now”
• “I lost my phone, send money to this number”
The goal is to create panic so you act fast before you have time to think.
Know that an unexpected call demanding money during an emergency is a red flag, especially when you are pressured to act immediately or keep it secret. These are common tactics used in scam attempts. 🚩
Protect yourself:
• Hang up and call your loved one directly using a known number
• Verify the situation with another family member or friend
• Never send money, gift cards, or cryptocurrency based on a phone call alone
• Create a family “safe word” to confirm real emergencies
• Be cautious about what you share publicly; audio can be used to mimic voices
Your loved one’s voice may sound real, but the situation may not be.
Remember, scammers rely on fear, urgency, and emotion to trick you.
Take a moment. Verify. Then act.
