The Plymouth Road Runner, introduced in 1968 by Plymouth, was a no-frills muscle car designed to offer high performance at a reasonable price. Plymouth paid Warner Bros. $50,000 to use the Road Runner name and likeness from the popular cartoon character. The Road Runner came with a standard 383 cubic inch V8 engine, capable of 335 horsepower, and a beefy suspension system designed for speed and durability.
In 1969, Plymouth introduced a 440 cubic inch V8 engine option, and in 1970, they offered the legendary 426 Hemi engine, which solidified the Road Runner’s status as a muscle car icon. It featured a distinctive “beep-beep” horn, mimicking the cartoon bird's signature sound, and was celebrated for its raw power and straightforward design.
Despite the rising insurance costs and fuel prices of the early 1970s that led to the decline of muscle cars, the Road Runner remained popular due to its affordability and impressive performance. Today, the Plymouth Road Runner is a cherished classic, remembered for its role in the golden age of American muscle cars.
