1942: June 4: Battle of Midway

In the morning of June 4, 1942, after sending planes to attack the U.S. base at Midway, the Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu were fatally damaged by dive bombers from USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Yorktown (CV-5). Later in that day, Yorktown was abandonded after bomb and torpedo hits by planes from Japanese carrier Hiryu. The latter was, in turn, hit by U.S. carrier planes. Compelled by their losses to abandon their plans to capture Midway, the Japanese retired westward. The battle was a decisive win for the U.S. and would continue with the Navy pursuing the Japanese on June 6.

Gaspar de Portolá's expedition in 1769–1770 marked the first European exploration of California's interior. Led by Portolá, the diverse group aimed to assert Spanish presence along the Pacific coast. Facing harsh conditions, they reached San Diego in 1769 and discovered San Francisco Bay in 1770. This expedition laid the groundwork for Spanish colonization, establishing forts and missions, and solidifying territorial claims. It was a pivotal moment in California's history, shaping its cultural landscape for centuries.

In May 1987, the Golden Gate Bridge celebrated its 50th anniversary with "Bridgewalk '87," attracting 300,000 pedestrians to the span. Despite concerns, structural integrity remained intact. Festivities included a ceremony with Mayor Dianne Feinstein, a vintage car parade, toll suspension, and evening concerts with fireworks. The American Society of Civil Engineers honored bridge builders with events leading up to the celebration. New gardens and a personalized brick walkway were added for visitors' enjoyment. For further details, refer to Spiro N. Pollalis and Caroline Otto's November 1988 research paper: "THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: 50th Anniversary Celebration."

The White Night riots erupted on May 21, 1979, in San Francisco after Dan White received a lenient voluntary manslaughter conviction for assassinating Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. The lenient verdict enraged the city's gay community, leading to violent protests at City Hall that caused extensive property damage and injuries.

The riots highlighted the longstanding tension between the gay community and the San Francisco Police Department, exacerbated by White's former role as a police officer. That night, police retaliated with a violent raid on a gay bar in the Castro District, resulting in numerous injuries and arrests.

In the aftermath, gay leaders did not apologize for the riots, which bolstered their political influence. This shift in power contributed to Dianne Feinstein's election as mayor later that year. She appointed a pro-gay Chief of Police, leading to better representation of gay individuals in the police force and reduced community tensions.
