History has a strange way of repeating itself—especially in bourbon.

In 1877, Colonel E.H. Taylor fell into financial trouble after investing heavily in his O.F.C. Distillery. One year later, George T. Stagg and an associate acquired the distressed operation.

That distillery eventually became Buffalo Trace.

Fast-forward 148 years.

Garrard County Distilling—originally announced as a $250 million development—shut down after defaulting on its debt. A Sazerac affiliate acquired the debt, became the primary creditor and purchased the nearly new distillery at a court-ordered auction for $20 million.

The interesting part?

George T. Stagg was born in Garrard County.

So, in 1878, Stagg acquired a financially distressed Kentucky distillery.

In 2026, the company preserving his legacy acquired another financially distressed distillery—in the county where Stagg was born.

Coincidence? Probably.

A tremendous piece of bourbon history coming full circle? Absolutely.

I’m not saying they’ll make George T. Stagg or Stagg (Jr) there. But if Sazerac’s marketing department can’t do something with this story, I’m available for consultation!

For anyone wondering, the Stagg line is my favorite. Except for maybe the first couple batches of Jr, never had one I didn't absolutely cherish. Yes I liked batch 9 more than 12 btw. Very unpopular opinion with fellow bourbon hounds!

Cheers, Cincy!

You never know who you'll run into on the Bourbon Trail.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting former University of Kentucky basketball standout and NBA center Willie Cauley-Stein. He couldn't have been a nicer guy.

Standing next to a 7-footer is a pretty good reminder that I'm not as tall as I thought I was.

Thanks for taking the time to chat and snap a photo, Willie.

Cheers Cincy
