This Friday, June 19, Bay Aging’s administrative offices and Gloucester Adult Day Center will be closed as we join our community in celebrating Juneteenth (Freedom Day)—a powerful reminder of the enduring strength, resilience, and rich history of African Americans.

Bay Transit and Bay Aging Active Lifestyle Centers will remain open, following their usual operating hours. Home Care Aides will be on duty and visiting clients as scheduled.

As an organization dedicated to ensuring dignity, fairness, and respect for every neighbor in our region, we recognize today as a vital moment to reflect on our shared history and the continuous journey toward true community equity.

📜 What is Juneteenth?
On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to ensure the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation—bringing the news of freedom to the last remaining enslaved African Americans. Today, it stands as America's "second Independence Day."

🤝 How We Can Honor the Day Together:
• Support Local: Uplift Black-owned businesses, artisans, and creators who enrich our Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck communities.
• Connect & Reflect: Take a moment to check in on an older adult, neighbor, or friend. True independence thrives when we support and listen to one another.
• Celebrate Culture: Whether you are attending a local community gathering, spending time with family at our Active Lifestyle Centers, or sharing a traditional meal, let’s honor the deep roots of Black culture and history.

At Bay Aging, we believe a strong community is one where everyone is valued, connected, and supported. Let's celebrate the progress made and continue working together to build a more inclusive, supportive future for neighbors of all ages.

Today, we celebrate the Stars and Stripes and commemorate the official adoption of our national flag on June 14, 1777.

Whether you are flying Old Glory at home or your business, it’s a perfect time to ensure we are showing our respect by following proper flag etiquette. Here are a few quick tips for displaying the flag today:

• 🌅 Sunrise to Sunset: Customarily, the flag should only be displayed from sunrise to sunset. If you choose to keep it up 24/7, make sure it is properly illuminated throughout the night.
• 🙌 Keep it High: Ensure the flag never touches anything beneath it—including the ground, floor, or water.
• 🌧️ Weather Check: Unless you have an all-weather flag, it shouldn't be flown during severe weather or heavy rain.

Let’s fill our feeds with red, white, and blue today! Drop a photo of your flag flying high in the comments below! 👇
