THIS IS HUGE: Utah's Republican Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson just told 60 Minutes that for the first time, threats to our elections are coming from inside our own federal government. And she's refusing to back down.
This is a Republican in one of the reddest states in America.
On Sunday, Henderson, who oversees Utah's elections, told Lesley Stahl that in the past, the threats she dealt with all came from outside the country, things like cybersecurity attacks and foreign actors. Now, she said, they're also coming from within our own government, according to Mediaite.
Read that again.
Here's what happened.
Last year, Trump's Justice Department demanded Utah's statewide voter registration list, including information the state is required by law to keep private: Social Security numbers, full dates of birth and driver's license numbers.
Henderson said the administration couldn't give good answers about why it needed that data, and she was worried about what it would do with it.
So she said no.
Since then, she's been warned she could be prosecuted and even sent to prison. And last month, the DOJ told her she is officially under investigation.
Think about that.
Trump won Utah by more than 20 points. Henderson is a member of his own party. And she's going toe to toe with the president of the United States to protect her voters' private information.
When Stahl pointed that out, Henderson's answer was simple: "I'm just doing my job."
She said it doesn't matter what the consequences are, as long as she's doing what's right.
Thank you, Deidre Henderson, for protecting Utah voters' private data even as Trump's Justice Department threatens you with prison.
