🌐 Understanding Reverse Logistics: Steps and Benefits

🌐 What is Reverse Logistics?

🔄 Reverse logistics is the process of planning, implementing, and efficiently controlling the flow of materials, semi-finished products, and related information from points of consumption back to the point of origin to recover value or dispose of properly.

📦 Steps to Implement Reverse Logistics

🔍 Reverse logistics is formed based on various reasons such as: recalling unsold products for improvement, retrieving reusable packaging, collecting defective products, and recovering products that can be dismantled and partially reused. The reverse logistics process includes four main steps:
- Collection: Gathering unsold products, defective products, and packaging, then transporting them to the collection point.
- Inspection: At the collection point, checking the quality, selecting, and classifying goods based on criteria. This step is crucial and affects the subsequent steps.
- Processing: The business may directly reuse, resell, refurbish (repair defective products, remanufacture, dismantle for parts), or dispose of waste in an environmentally friendly manner.
- Distribution: After refurbishment, products are distributed as usual through storage, transportation, and sales activities.

🌟 Role of Reverse Logistics

- Ensuring Smooth Forward Logistics: Helps quickly and timely return non-conforming products to the market.
- Enhancing Customer Service Levels: A good recall policy brings competitive advantages as it satisfies customer needs even when they receive defective products.
- Cost Savings: Reverse logistics saves costs by recycling materials, reducing packaging costs through reuse, recovering residual value from discarded products, and reselling products (even at lower prices). Although reverse logistics costs can account for 3% to 15% of total costs, good organization and implementation can significantly save other expenses.
- Environmental Protection: Through recovering and recycling, reasonable handling, and disposal, reverse logistics helps reduce negative environmental impacts.

🚨 Breaking News: US DOC Issues Preliminary Anti-Subsidy Findings on Vietnamese Paper Plates 🚨

📢 The U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) has released preliminary findings in its anti-subsidy investigation on paper plates imported from Vietnam. Initiated on February 14, 2024, at the behest of U.S. manufacturers, the investigation targets paper plates under HS codes 4823.69.0040, 4823.61.0040, and possibly packed with other products under HS codes 9505.90.4000 and 9505.90.6000.

📊 The DOC identified two mandatory respondents, but one declined participation, leaving only one company, which received a preliminary countervailing duty rate of 5.48%. Five non-cooperating companies, including the one that refused to participate, were assigned a rate of 237.65%, based on adverse available data. All other Vietnamese companies were assigned the single mandatory respondent’s rate of 5.48%.

💼 As a result of these preliminary findings, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will require cash deposits for shipments entering the U.S. at these temporary countervailing duty rates starting July 1, 2024.

🔍 The DOC plans on-site verifications to confirm the information provided by Vietnamese exporters. These verifications will inform the final decision, expected by November 5, 2024, barring extensions. Stakeholders can submit comments within seven days post-verification report, with rebuttals due five days thereafter.

📝 The Trade Remedies Authority of Vietnam advises involved businesses to prepare and fully cooperate with the DOC’s upcoming verification process and to submit comments on the preliminary findings if necessary.

🚢 Navigating the Waves of Container Shipping: A Battle for Capacity

📦 Container shipping lines are fiercely competing to acquire or lease ships to increase cargo capacity on East-West routes. Meanwhile, ship owners are taking advantage of rising charter rates.

🛳️ In mid-June, CMA-CGM announced the French Peak service, adding seven 7,000 TEU ships connecting Asia with Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The first voyage departed on June 30th with the APL Oregon.

🌍 Alphaliner noted CMA-CGM's history of boosting Asia-France routes during capacity shortages, like in Q4 2021.

🇬🇧 MSC's Brittania service, with the 9,640 TEU MSC Denisse X, will connect China and Vietnam to the UK, Netherlands, and Germany, starting July 1st. MSC is also reinstating the Mustang trans-Pacific service from July 8th with the 16,000 TEU MSC Lella.

📈 At the Multimodal exhibition, Maersk's Joe Knight highlighted that smaller vessels are being introduced to maximize utilization and reduce industry pressure.

🔍 Xeneta's Peter Sand noted ship owners are raising charter rates and extending lease terms. Recently, Maersk leased a 4,600 TEU vessel for $40,000/day, and CMA-CGM leased a 7,100 TEU ship for $80,000/day.

🚢 Lars Jensen of Vespucci Maritime indicated current challenges may persist, with high demand making it profitable for ship owners but costlier for shippers.

🌏 Sealead announced a new service from China and South Korea to California, starting June 16th. Alphaliner noted this mirrors Sealead's previous trans-Pacific service launched during peak COVID demand.

⚓ At TOC Europe, Jensen remarked that smaller shipping lines are returning to long-distance routes as freight rates rise.
