Why World Gorilla Day Matters
• Origins: Established in 2017 by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, September 24 marks the day Dian Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Centre in Rwanda in 1967.
• Conservation Status: All gorilla species and subspecies are endangered or critically endangered due to poaching, habitat loss, disease, and climate change.
Positive Progress: Intensive protection efforts have helped mountain gorilla numbers rise to over 1,000 individuals in the wild.
