Public transport in South Africa

South Africa is a beautiful country and there is much to see - however it is important to travel and explore it safely.

Public transport can carry real risks, here's what that can look like:

🚌 Buses, minibuses, coaches
Robbery and theft are common, both on board and in waiting areas - which are themselves a crime hotspot.

🚗 Car hire
Rental scams exist with issues ranging from hidden fees to unfair damage claims. Even with a reputable agency, road risks include spiking, car hijacking and ‘smash and grab’. Be extra vigilant when stopping at traffic and driving at night - always watch out for obstacles on the road.

🚖 Local taxis
Taxi-related violence is still uncomfortably common with turf disputes between operators, attacks on passengers and kidnappings at ATMs. Some operators have been linked to drug trafficking and armed robbery.

👣 Unregulated cars
Drivers posing as metered taxis are often a front for robbery. If it's unmarked, unregistered and waved you over from the curb - do not get in, it's not a taxi.

🤳 E-hailing apps

That’s right - we’re going to say it.

E-hailing in South Africa has huge problems. Here are JUST a few:

❌ Stolen vehicles operating as legit rides
❌ Passengers kicked out of cars mid-route
❌ Overcharging, unrefunded payments
❌ Cases of phone snatching
❌ Assault

The e-hailing industry relies heavily on scale over accountability.

It’s a highly competitive market, and drivers compete to take routes and take on customers, creating more pressure in an already pressured environment.

There are cases where drivers admit they cannot afford to update their car to ensure it is roadworthy, and so will pay a bribe to have the car signed off as ‘good to go.’

This is incredibly dangerous.
