Arriving in Chengdu:
The first time teacher that lands at one of Chengdu's two airports does not have to worry about landing in a cultural forest. The city publishes and gives out free at coffeeshops and restaurants Chengdu City Life, which lists what is happening, want is going to happen and list all possible activities for citize ns and visitors alike. It has a very good map in the centrefold.
Chengdu is a flat land surrounded by sky high mountains that make Table mountain look like a baby. They are easy to climb with age old steps and most recently cable cars. Weekends most Chengduvians take to the mountains and farmers cottages to relax and drink tea and play mahjong. It's great fun.
The city had wonderful museums and art galleries and old antique streets and lanes, including the one where paper money was used for the first time. And of course the pièce de resistance, the panda breeding and research facility, a must to see.
The transport system is highly developed: bikes, taxis , fast and slow busses and the new subway. So the cities around Chengdu are easily accessible to visit and enjoy. And its very safe even at night for a woman alone, because there are always people and police nearby.
Eateries and bars from all nations make eating out a journey of discovery.
It's a historians joy and delight augmented by the books available in bookshops and libraries and trips to places of historic interest. So many old temples from days long
gone by are worth visiting and most have vegetarian restaurants attached.
Consumer goods from all over the world are available in boggling quantities and the hospitals are modern and westernized. But do t forget the traditional healers- a study by itself.
You will usually have the foreign expert as your mentor and will smooth things for you.
I absolutely loved it and am sure you will too.
