PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RUNAWAY SHUNT TRAIN ACCIDENT AT BWANA MKUBWA

It is with deep concern and sadness that we confirm a serious train accident which occurred today, 15 May 2026, at approximately 15:00 hours, involving a shunt train movement at Bwana Mkubwa.

The incident involved locomotive number 4346 and 11 wagons loaded with coal, which experienced a runaway movement in the direction of Ndola before derailing and overturning between Bwana Mkubwa and Ndola Railway Station, near Itawa Bridge.

Preliminary reports indicate that two individuals who were walking within the railway reserve strip may have been trapped beneath the overturned wagons. Rescue and recovery operations are currently underway.

Our thoughts are with the affected individuals and their families during this extremely difficult time. The possibility of loss of life makes this incident particularly tragic, and every effort is being made to locate and assist those involved as quickly and safely as possible.

An investigation has been launched to establish the cause of the runaway movement and determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

We are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and remain fully committed to cooperating with relevant authorities throughout the rescue, recovery, and investigation process.

Further updates will be issued periodically.

EDITOR'S NOTE:

A runaway train is a train that starts moving on its own and cannot be controlled or stopped, usually because of brake failure, a mechanical problem, or being accidentally released. It may keep moving and even pick up speed until it gets off the track or is brought under control by a train crew.
