Protect Your Borehole. Protect Your Health.

To safeguard groundwater quality and prevent contamination, the Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) reminds the public that minimum distance requirements for boreholes are provided for under the Water Resources Management Act No. 21 of 2011 and the Water Resources Management (Groundwater and Boreholes) Regulations, 2018.

These minimum distances are based on aquifer type, pumping rates, and pollution risk, and are essential for protecting drinking water sources and public health.

📌 Minimum Distance Between Boreholes •

Most boreholes must be at least 50 metres apart

• Limestone and cavity aquifers require up to 100 metres

• Unconsolidated sediments such as Kalahari sands require up to 200 metres

📌 Minimum Distance from Pollution Sources

• Pit latrines and septic tanks – 30 metres

• Animal pens and farm sheds – 50 metres

• Fuel, fertiliser and pesticide storage – 100 metres

• Waste disposal sites and cemeteries – 500 metres

⚠️ Why this matters

Boreholes must be drilled away from pollution sources such as pit latrines, septic tanks, waste sites, and chemical storage areas. When boreholes are located too close to these sources, pollutants can migrate through the ground and contaminate the groundwater, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and threatening household health and long term water security.

✅ Before drilling a borehole

Always consult WARMA, follow approved minimum distances, and obtain the necessary permits.

Safe spacing today protects Zambia’s water tomorrow.

YOU ARE MY LAST

Colleagues, November pay is for school fees for the next year and December pay is also for ensuring school requirements for our children in boarding schools are stocked up for January. Avoid over indulging and partying like there is no tomorrow in the name of "festive season".

Then come January you start troubling us with SOS messages and calls for help with rentals, school requirements and so on as though it is a sudden expense you never saw coming. Plan now and remember "failing to plan is actually planning to fail".

Personally, I shall not tolerate ma "YOU ARE MY LAST HOPE" calls and messages after mwachiliza. I also have my own pressure which I am currently planning to navigate knowing fully that January is surely coming. So save yourself the pressure and desperation by denying yourself certain pleasures for the sake of your household needs.

Mwa mvela, palibe chigayo pano.
