Freight forwarders calculate cargo size to determine shipping costs and ensure efficient handling and transport of goods. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how they typically perform this calculation:
1. Measuring Dimensions

The first step is to measure the dimensions of the cargo. This includes the length, width, and height. Measurements should be taken in meters or centimeters.
2. Calculating Volume

Once the dimensions are measured, the volume of the cargo can be calculated. The volume is found by multiplying the length, width, and height of the cargo.
Formula:

Volume (cubic meters)=Length (m)×Width (m)×Height (m)Volume (cubic meters)=Length (m)×Width (m)×Height (m)
3. Volume Weight Calculation

For air freight, freight forwarders also calculate the volume weight (or dimensional weight) to determine which is higher: the actual weight or the volume weight. Air carriers charge based on the greater of these two weights.
Volume Weight Formula:

Volume Weight (kg)=Length (cm)×Width (cm)×Height (cm)/6000

The divisor 6000 is commonly used in air freight, but some carriers might use different divisors like 5000.
4. Comparing Actual Weight and Volume Weight

After calculating the volume weight, it is compared to the actual weight of the cargo. The higher of the two weights is used for pricing the shipment.
5. Containerization for Sea Freight

For sea freight, cargo size is often calculated to determine how it will fit into standard shipping containers (e.g., 20-foot or 40-foot containers). Freight forwarders assess whether the cargo can be consolidated with other shipments (LCL - Less than Container Load) or if it requires a full container (FCL - Full Container Load).
6. Palletization and Packing

If the cargo is palletized, the dimensions and weight of the pallets are measured. Proper packing and palletization help optimize space usage and reduce the risk of damage.
7. Special Considerations

Freight forwarders also take into account any special considerations such as:

Shape of Cargo: Irregularly shaped cargo might require special handling.
Hazardous Materials: Certain materials require specific packaging and handling.
Stackability: Whether cargo can be stacked can influence how space is utilized.

Example Calculation

Suppose you have a cargo with the following dimensions:

Length: 1.2 meters
Width: 0.8 meters
Height: 0.6 meters
Actual Weight: 200 kg

Volume Calculation:

Volume=1.2 m×0.8 m×0.6 m=0.576 cubic meters (CBM)Volume=1.2m×0.8m×0.6m=0.576cubic meters (CBM)
Volume Weight Calculation for Air Freight:

Volume Weight=120 cm×80 cm×60 cm /6000=96 kg

Since the actual weight (200 kg) is greater than the volume weight (96 kg), the actual weight will be used for air freight pricing.
Final Consideration

Freight forwarders will also factor in the type of goods, destination, and mode of transport to finalize the shipping cost. This comprehensive approach ensures accurate pricing and optimal cargo handling.
