One of today’s jobs turned into a bit of a rescue mission.

One of our regular customers had broken down and was facing a wait of a few hours for recovery. They needed to get their children safely back home to Barnard Castle, so they gave us a call.

We were able to get to them in around 10 minutes and take the children home while they stayed with the car waiting for recovery.

Not every journey is planned in advance, and sometimes just being able to call someone you know and trust makes things a little easier.

A nice booking from Darlington Station today 🚕

We picked up a couple from the station who were heading out to Middleton Lodge for a wedding.

It’s always good seeing how many people come into Darlington by train and then head out to some of the great venues we have around the area.

And the Mazda didn’t look too bad outside Middleton Lodge either! 😄

An early start from Headlam Hall this morning ✈️🚕

We had an early morning pickup from Headlam Hall, taking two guests to Teesside Airport for the first leg of a very long journey home — all the way to Texas.

They’d been staying in the area for business and Headlam Hall recommended C&P Taxis for their airport transfer, which is always really appreciated.

One of the things I enjoy about the job is meeting people from all over the world. We seem to have had quite a few international visitors recently, travelling to the area for both business and leisure.

With an early flight and a long journey ahead, having your transport booked and waiting is one less thing to worry about.

A trip out into the Yorkshire Dales this week 🚕🌿

We had a pre-booked collection from Darlington Train Station for a customer who had travelled all the way from America and was heading out to the little village of Muker in the Dales.

She’d found C&P Taxis online before her trip and booked us for the journey from the station, which is always nice to hear — especially when somebody is arranging their transport from the other side of the world!

The Dales were looking beautiful on the drive over, despite us catching a bit of rain along the way.

We actually ended up dropping off not far from Usha Gap, where we’d been for a family camping trip only a few weeks ago. It’s funny how often this job takes you back to places you’ve recently visited.

I have to admit, I really enjoy these countryside bookings. A drive through the Dales certainly isn’t a bad way to spend a working day.

A busy night of collections from Middleton Lodge last night 🎶🚕

We had three separate late-night journeys from Middleton Lodge back to Darlington, transporting members of the live band and DJ after an event.

They all finished at different times, so we arranged the collections around them and made sure everyone had transport back to their hotel when they were ready.

One of the things I enjoy about this job is the variety of people we meet along the way. It was really interesting hearing some of their stories — travelling around the world, meeting all sorts of people and getting paid to do something they genuinely enjoy. It sounds like they’ve had some experiences!

Middleton Lodge looked lovely lit up at night too.

For weddings, events or hotel transport where different collection times need arranging, we’re always happy to organise journeys in advance.

A two-car job from Redworth Hall today 🚕🚕

We collected a group of 8 who had been attending a wedding at Redworth Hall and took them back to Darlington Train Station for their journey home.

It gave us a good opportunity to have both Mazdas out together — particularly useful for larger groups who want to travel at the same time without having to split their plans around different taxis.

Redworth Hall is a lovely setting for a wedding as well. The building and grounds are beautiful, and it’s one of those places we’re always happy to get a booking to.

A late one at Headlam Hall Tuesday night.

We were booked to collect a lady arriving from Holland into Newcastle Airport and take her down to Headlam Hall. Her flight landed at 10:10pm, but unfortunately her luggage had gone missing and it was around 11:20pm before she finally made it out of the airport.

Not the nicest way to start a visit, but we were still there waiting for her when she came through and got her down to Headlam Hall for the night.

We’re picking her up again today for the return journey to Newcastle Airport. She mentioned she’d like to see some of the area while she’s here, so I’ve offered to take her back via a more scenic route through the countryside and over the Pennines rather than just taking the quickest road back.

One of the things I enjoy about doing these longer pre-booked journeys is meeting people visiting the North East from different parts of the world and, when we’ve got the time, being able to show them a little bit of the area rather than just getting from A to B.

And I have to say, Headlam Hall looks pretty impressive lit up on a night.

After doing a trial run with two cars to see if it was worthwhile, we decided to stick with it and invest in something a bit more comfortable and practical for our customers.

We’ve now got the Mazda 6 saloon and Mazda 6 estate, which gives us a bit more flexibility depending on what our customers need.

The saloon is ideal for most everyday journeys, while the estate gives us plenty of extra luggage space for airport runs, station transfers, walking trips and anyone travelling with larger cases or equipment.

If you’re booking with us, you’re welcome to ask for either car. Or just let us know how many people are travelling and roughly what luggage you’re bringing and we’ll make sure we send the most suitable one.

Both have had a good clean and are ready to go. It’s nice to finally have the pair together!

When I started Harry’s Taxis, there were very few viable independent taxi firms around. The big companies had huge advertising budgets, established brands and years of experience behind them.

For me, this was a complete Hail Mary.

My goal for the first year wasn’t to become the biggest or the busiest. It was simply to survive.

If I’m honest, despite wanting it to succeed more than anything, I’ve always been a bit of a pessimist. I genuinely expected it to fail.

Those early days were incredibly hard. Trying to find the right market, getting the name out there, creating systems, building routines and learning how to run a business from the ground up. Every day felt like another lesson.

Fast forward to today, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built.

We now have a fantastic team, and something I’m equally proud of is the network of independent local taxi businesses we’ve built relationships with. Every one of them is on their journeys on the challenges of running a business as I am.

Running a business isn’t easy. It’s stressful, demanding and, at times, completely thankless. But it’s also rewarding, exciting and one of the biggest personal challenges you’ll ever take on.

When I first started, I heard plenty of comments like:

• “You’ll never make it work.”
• Other drivers saying “You’ll only give everyone else the rubbish jobs while you keep the best ones.”

In the last few weeks we didn’t have any availability for one of our regular customers so we reached out to Bex and she took our regular to Scotland and as of late c&p were off to stand-stead in London.

Thankfully, the people around me know that’s never been what Harry’s Taxis is about.

Today, we’ve got Swanny and Dan looking after the minibus, Ruth and me covering the cars, and we work alongside some brilliant local independent operators, including
