🚨 MOTUS UPDATE: Still no repair date — but FMCSA says "weeks, not months"
Yesterday in Chattanooga, FMCSA deputy administrator Jesse Elison gave another update on Motus, the troubled carrier registration system:
• A fix is "really weeks and not months" — but still no actual date
• He admitted the system is blocking more than just bad actors: "It is still absolutely more people than just the bad actors we intended it for"
• Called the first 4-6 weeks "really, really brutal" — says things have improved since
• His advice to carriers: "If you don't need to go in, don't go in yet"
If you ARE stuck mid-registration:
• Contact FMCSA directly — he says they move on individual cases "in real time"
• Loop in your insurance contacts
• Document every attempt
Reminder: FMCSA has paused biennial registration enforcement, so a lapsed biennial update shouldn't deactivate your DOT number right now.
The anti-fraud goal is real — Motus exists to keep unqualified carriers off the road. But five months in, legitimate carriers are still paying the price.
