Historic Hopsewee Plantation, home of Thomas Lynch Jr, signer of the Declaration of the United States, was fascinating. Such a nice lunch at the Tea Room then time seeing the museum, house, and slave quarters. Our travelers are the best! A very nice place and fun day!

Built between 1735 and 1740, Hopsewee House is oriented to face the river and not the road (the road in this instance is The King’s Highway), as we tend to build houses today.
The reason for this practice wasn’t for the view, as you might imagine. The true purpose was to have your welcoming front door facing the river from which your family and guests would arrive. Mostly everyone and everything traveled on the water in the early days.
At that time in South Carolina Lowcountry history, bridges and ferries were mostly just “a good idea”, especially this far away from Charleston. Here on the Santee Delta, we were truly thought to be pioneers in the far-reaching frontier!
Come visit us at Hopsewee Plantation.

Our Charleston 1776 tour was an absolute delight! We learned so much while visiting The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon and beautiful Middleton Place. Traveling with such a fun group made the experience even more enjoyable as we explored fascinating history together. We especially enjoyed lunch at Middleton Place, followed by tours of the House Museum and the gardens.
